It’s hard to believe it was snowing only two weeks ago when you look at the blue skies and the temperatures above 15°C! G and me are celebrating our anniversary and to commemorate this we decided to take a little trip to Dresden since neither of us had visited before. We both love Germany and driving up to unknown places for a long weekend, and the weather was really good to us for a change. My poor ginger got a slight sunburn while I reveled in the warmth of the sun on my skin as much as I could. We put in way more than our average steps per day with all the walking around and took as many pictures as the scaffolding allowed to without looking like we were actually visiting a construction or excavation site.
Since we were driving, as we usually do when we go for a short weekend trip, we made the most of it and stopped in Moritzburg on the way there and Meissen on the way back.
Moritzburg looked absolutely picture perfect, from afar. The surroundings make it the perfect most romantic location, however once you walk up close to the palace, you realise most of the architectural details are all painted. It makes for pretty pictures though, look:
We made it to Dresden at around 2pm and shortly after we checked into this very recommendable aparthotel, very modern and hipster design and right in the centre of the city. We were able to walk everywhere very comfortably. Our first visit was literally outside the door: the Zwinger, a beautiful building which basically leads you onto the rest of the city, Semperoper, Theaterplatz, and ending in the Frauenkirche square where we enjoyed a cold beer in the glaring sun.
The next morning we woke up relatively early and enjoyed walking around the empty city while it woke up. Taking advantage of the time we decided to go to the dome of the Frauenkirche, some 90m above the ground which is a challenge for me since I’m afraid of heights. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I am proud to say I made it without too much panic and much needed support from G. Afterwards we walked to the Grosser Garten where we were able to take stunning pictures of the park and the palace, and enjoyed yet another beer in the sun. When the sun came down and we had had something to eat (no special mention) we walked to take some pictures of Dresden after dark. I had unfortunately left my camera at the hotel but after one too many cocktails during Happy Hour I wouldn’t have been able to take any decent shots anyway.
On the last day we slept in a bit and later left on our way to Meissen, a charming little village by the river with a church within a castle atop a mountain. Doesn’t it sound like a fairytale? Its red roofs climbing up and down the mountain make you feel like you’ve landed somewhere in the mediterranean by accident, with narrow streets and tall ancient buildings and cobblestone pavements. Very enjoyable for a few hours, we had something to eat and walked for a few hours before getting back on the road.
