Decorating and customizing with DIY tassels

Decorating and customizing with DIY tassels
Reading Time: 3 minutes

As you know if you’ve been reading me for a while, I’m quite a creative person and my brain can’t keep quiet for very long. When I’m not coming up with my own recipes, I like to get crafty. If you are curious, which I hope you are, you can see my previous projects here. This time we’re going to be doing something with DIY tassels, which I will be showing you how to make from scratch and then we’ll see a few examples of how these can be used to personalize objects and home decor.

Tassels are all the rage and have been for a while, but as I like to do with so many other things, instead of buying something ready made we’ll be doing something ourselves! That way it will be completely personal and you’ll feel so proud of yourselves for putting a small effort and receiving such a big reward for it. You will see how the possibilities are endless and you won’t want to wait to share the results.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • yarn or embroidery thread
  • scissors

Yes, that is everything you need for making DIY tassels.

  1. Cut two 5cm long pieces of yarn and set aside (we’ll use them later).
  2. Wrap the yarn around your hand until it’s as thick as you like it. I wrapped it about 25 times.
  3. Take one of the 5cm long pieces of yarn and tie it together.
  4. Take the second piece of yarn and wrap it around to create a head for your tassel.
  5. It’s time to cut the bottoms (you can also trim it to the desired length). You’re done!

How easy was that?

Now the next step is to make a bunch of them in the colours of your liking for the next project. We’re going to…

… personalize a necklace!

If you have a simple necklace that you don’t use often, this is the perfect project to give it a new life. Just a simple golden or silver chain will do, or even a leather one!

  • golden chain (or another kind of chain or necklace)
  • DIY tassels
  1. Remember that piece of yarn we used to tie the top of the tassel head on Step 3? That will help you pull the tassel over the necklace or chain. Do as many tassels as you like, in the colours of your choice, and you’re done.
  2. You can even add a drop or two of essential oils to the tassels, which will diffuse into the air throughout the day so you can enjoy the benefits and look fashionable at the same time!

How to personalize a cushion

We all have an uninspired Ikea cushion on our sofa, probably purchased because it was cheap in a moment or certain desperation- yes, there is such a thing as a home decor emergency! -. It’s a plain colour and has no decoration, but heck, it’s supposed to be practical and not a piece of art!

Sure, that’s the theory. But who doesn’t like to have cutesy stuff at home?

  • a cushion cover
  • as many DIY tassels as you like, which you made beforehand
  • needle and thread in the same colour as the cushion cover
  • scissors
  1. Thread the needle and sew one tassel at each corner of the cushion. The tassel will be on the outside of the cushion, but make sure to hide all threads in the inside.
  2. You can sew more tassels throughout the cushion if you like.

How to personalize a t-shirt

  • a cute T-shirt
  • as many DIY tassels as you like, which you made beforehand
  • needle and thread in the same colour as the T-shirt
  • scissors
  1. Thread the needle and sew one tassel at a time to the bottom hem of the T-shirt (or if you prefer you can choose a different place of the T-shirt instead!).
  2. For a cleaner look, make sure you always finish sewing on the inside of the T-shirt, so that no threads are sticking out.
  3. Trim whatever leftover thread there is and repeat with each tassel.
  4. Wear your T-shirt proudly!

How to make a tassel garland

  • as many DIY tassels as you like, which you made beforehand
  • a long thread or ribbon
  1. Thread your tassels onto the thread with the help of a needle (see picture below).
  2. Once you’ve added all the tassels, you can find a nice place to hang your garland from. This would be a great low budget Christmas decoration idea!
